Pacific Hydro wins carbon deal for Fiji
:
Dutch bank ABN AMRO said arranged the world?s first bank-intermediated carbon emissions credit deal under the Kyoto Protocol, linking two Pacific Hydro Ltd. H\hydropower projects in Fiji with a credit buyer, British utility Centrica Plc. Sustainable Energy Ltd., a joint venture of Pacific Hydro, of Australia, and government-owned Fiji Electricity Authority, is to sell over seven years to ABN AMRO the carbon credits created by the 6.5 ? MW Wainikasou and 3-MW Vaturu hydro projects in Fiji. The credits, representing an estimated 25,000 tons of carbon per year, will be resold to Accord Energy, the trading arm of Centrica, which will use them to offset its carbon dioxide emissions. Under the Kyoto Protocol, industries in developed countries can offset their carbon dioxide emissions by buying credits from projects that cut emissions in developing countries. The credits will sell at a discount to benchmark European prices, trading at 19 euros (US$23) per ton. Resource : HRW Magazine Volume 13, number 4 September 2005
